The Providence College field hockey team defeated Vermont, 6-0, on Sunday, October 20 at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. Freshman Adrienne Houle (Burlington, Ontario), senior Brittany Ross (Scarborough, Maine) and junior Kaleigh FitzPatrick (Dedham, Mass.) each scored two goals in the effort. Junior goalkeeper Deidra Clymer (South Windsor, Conn.) picked up her third shut-out victory of the season with two saves.
Houle gave the Friars a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute of play as she tipped-in a ball at the right post. Sophomore Salene Shaffer (Millerstown, Pa.) was credited with the assist as she fed Houle the ball from the top of the circle.
Ross sent the Friars into halftime with a 2-0 lead, as she knocked home a rebound in the 23rd minute, unassisted. It marked Ross' first goal of the season.
In the second half, the Friars scored four unanswered goals to take the victory. Ross picked up her second of the game to get things started in the 41st minute of play, as she one-timed a pass from senior Sally Adua (Madison, Conn.) into the lower right corner. Houle followed with her second tally of the game, unassisted, in the 43rd minute as she carried the ball into the top of the circle and slipped a back-hander into the boards.
FitzPatrick finished the game with back-to-back goals at 48:10 and 52:35. Her first was off a rebound, unassisted. Her second goal came off a feed from senior Caitlin Malone (Ossining, N.Y.) at the left post.
Providence out-shot Vermont, 29-4, and held an 8-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Prior to the game, the program honored its five seniors: Ross, Adua, Malone, Kasey Bulman (Farmingdale, N.J.) and Hillary Anderson (Barrington, R.I.).
