Providence College Field Hockey Falls To No. 5 Wake Forest, 4-3 In Overtime

Providence, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team lost to non-conference opponent No. 5 Wake Forest, 4-3, in overtime on Saturday, October 17 in Louisville, Ky. The Friars fall to 5-9 on the season.

Wake Forest jumped out to an early lead in the first half. Goals by Lizzie Rae and Raisa Schiller put the Demon Deacons in front 2-0. The first goal for the Friars came at the 23:38 mark when Christie Lonsky (Dingmans Ferry, Pa.) scored off a rebound. Shortly after, Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) was able to tie the game at 2-2, when she scored her team leading tenth goal of the season with an assist from Adrienne Marois (Auburn, Mass.).

In the second half, the Friars took a 3-2 lead at the 37:09 mark when Kelly Grogan (Allenwood, N.J.) scored off a penalty corner. Jamie Lipski (Camp Hill, Pa.) provided the assist for the goal. Lizzie Rae was able to score her second goal of the game for Wake Forest at 39:30 to tie the game at 3-3. The score remained 3-3 at the end of regulation and sent Providence to its first overtime match of the season.

In the overtime period the Friars had two opportunities coming out of penalty corners but were unable to score. At the 82:57 mark, Lizzie Rae scored the game winning goal to give Wake Forest a 4-3 victory. This goal was the third of the game for Rae. Raisa Schiller provided the assist on the goal.

Despite being outshot 14-11, the Friars held the advantage in penalty corners 8-6.

 

 

Providence returns to action on Tuesday, October 20 at 7:00 p.m. when it plays host to cross-town rival Brown. The game will be played at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I.
