Field Hockey Defeats Monmouth, 1-0

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated Monmouth (N.J.), 1-0, in non-conference action on Sunday, October 12 in West Long Branch, N.J. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Friars. Senior forward Kelly Romanowicz (Shrewsbury, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season to lead the Friars. Providence improves to 8-7 overall with the win, while the Hawks drop to 3-10 overall on the season. Romanowicz scored what proved to be the game-winning goal for the Friars with 7:25 remaining in the first half off of a cross from senior Stefanie Suehnholz (Flemington, N.J.). Suehnholz was credited with the assist. The Friars outshot the Hawks, 8-6. Monmouth held the advantage in penalty corners, 10-7. Senior Meaghan Moran (Framingham, Mass.) made two saves in goal for Providence in 66:47 minutes of action. She was replaced by junior Meredith Jones (Lake Forest, Ill.) in the final 3:13. Jones made one save, as the two goalkeepers combined for a team shutout. Monmouth's Carrie Colbert made five saves in the loss. Providence (8-7, 0-2 BIG EAST) will return to action on Friday, October 17 as it plays host to Syracuse in BIG EAST Conference action. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. on Hendricken Field.
