PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The 19th-ranked Providence College field hockey team defeated 16th-ranked Rutgers, 2-0, in a BIG EAST Conference match-up on October 11 in Providence, R.I. The Friars improve to 9-5 overall and 2-2 in the BIG EAST, while Rutgers drops to 10-3 (1-3 BIG EAST). Junior goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) recorded her fifth shut-out victory of the season and 17th of her career with nine saves. The Friars took a 1-0 lead into halftime after scoring the lone goal of the opening 35 half just 3:43 into the game. Junior Adrienne Marois (Auburn, Mass.) was credited with the goal on a penalty corner option, assisted by sophomore Jaime Lipski (Dallas, Pa.). Providence held a 6-5 advantage in shots in the first half, including a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Rutgers earned six penalty corners in the first half, while Providence registered five. In the second half, the Friars added an insurance goal in the 45th minute as junior forward Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) recorded her team-best ninth goal of the season. Poulin dove to tip-in a pass at the left post, which was fed to her by sophomore Ashlyn Hudson (Stoughton, Mass.). Hudson was credited with the assist. Rutgers out shot Providence, 15-5, in the second half and finished the game with a 20-11 advantage overall. Rutgers also completed the game with 13 penalty corners, compared to the Friars' eight. The Friar defense also held Rutgers' Amy Lewis in check during the game. Lewis entered the game ranked first in the nation in points and goals, but was unable to muster any offense in the loss. Lewis fired nine of the Scarlet Knight's 20 shots, putting four on goal.
Rutgers goalkeeper Lauren Decerbo finished the day with six saves. The Friars return to action on Sunday, October 12 against Boston University at 3:00 p.m. The game will be played at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Prior to Providence's game, Rutgers and Maine will square off in a neutral-site game at Noon. - FRIARS -
