Field Hockey Defeats Cornell, 3-0

HARTFORD, CONN. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated Cornell, 3-0, in non-conference action on Sunday, October 10 in Hartford, Conn. It marked the first shutout of the season for Providence, who improves to 7-8 overall. Cornell drops to 2-8 on the season with the loss. Sophomore Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.) led the Friar offense with one goal and two assists. Senior Amy Phillips (Worcester, Mass.) led off the scoring for Providence 9:27 into the game as she found the back of the cage off an assist from McGow. The goal marked Phillips' team-leading eighth goal of the season; a personal single-season career best. McGow put the Friars ahead, 2-0, with her seventh goal of the year at the 23:29 mark of the first half on a blast from the top of the circle. The Friars took their 2-0 lead into halftime. In the second half, sophomore Lauren Sickel (Plaistow, N.H.) scored her second goal of the season on a penalty corner with 11:08 left in the game. Sickel's goal was assisted by McGow. McGow's assist to Sickel marked her team-leading 12th of the season. With her four points in the game, McGow moves into sole possession of 19th-place on PC's all-time career scoring list as a sophomore with 46 points. Senior goalkeeper Meredith Jones (Lake Forest, Ill.) collected six saves in goal to post the shutout. Lori Blutinger made 14 saves for Cornell in the losing effort. The Friars outshot the Big Red, 30-10, and held the advantage in penalty corners, 13-9. Providence (7-8, 0-2 BIG EAST) returns to action on Friday, October 15 against BIG EAST foe Syracuse. The game is scheduled to be played at 7:00 p.m. in Syracuse, N.Y.
