AMHERST, Mass. -- The Providence College field hockey team defeated UMass-Amherst, 1-0, on Wednesday, October 10 in Amherst, Mass. The two teams were tied 0-0 after 70 minutes of regulation play and two 15-minute overtimes, before the Friars earned the win after winning the penalty stroke off by a 4-2 margin.

Junior Jen Chin (Norwood, Mass.), junior Courtney Dow (Hampstead, N.Y.), sophomore Stefanie Suehnholz (Flemington, N.J.) and senior Katie Willett (Biddeford, Maine) each scored in the stroke off for the Friars.

The victory over UMass ended the Friars' 11-game losing streak against the Minutemen and was the team's first win against UMass since the 1989 season.

Providence goalkeeper Meaghan Moran (Framingham, Mass.) made a career-high 11 saves in the win. UMass goaltender Ashley Egland registered six stops for the Minutemen. UMass outshot Providence, 24-16, and held the advantage on penalty corners, 11-7.

Providence will return to action on Sunday, October 14 against New Hampshire at PC's Hendricken Field.
