Box Score

HARTFORD, CONN. - The Providence College field hockey team fell to Rutgers, 4-2, in BIG EAST Conference action at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. Rutgers' Katie Morad recorded a hat-trick to lead the Scarlet Knights to their first league victory of the season and improve to 5-9 overall. The Friars fall to 6-8 overall and 0-2 in the BIG EAST.

Morad scored all three of her goals in the first half, giving the Scarlet Knights a 3-0 lead at halftime. Morad connected on her first tally of the day as she picked a loose ball up in front of the cage just 1:17 into the game and knocked it past Friar goalkeeper Meredith Jones (Lake Forest, Ill.). Morad put Rutgers ahead, 2-0, at the 11:06 mark when she deflected a rebound into the cage. Her third goal of the day proved to be the eventual game winner as she connected on a direct shot off a penalty corner. Jaime Fraser and Jocelyn Mattina were credited with the assists.

In the second half, PC closed the deficit to one goal as it scored twice within the first five minutes of action. Sophmore Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.) netted her sixth goal of the season on a reverse stick shot five yards out at the 37:03 mark to make the score, 3-1. Junior Kati Lary (Canaan, N.H.) followed with her sixth goal of the year at the 39:57 mark off a feed from freshman Abby Maguire (Southbury, Conn.) to make the score 3-2.

Rutgers added an insurance goal with 17:00 minutes remaining in the game, to make the final score 4-2. Fraser was credited with the goal as she deflected a pass from Mattina. Scarlet Knight goalkeeper Rosalyn Wentko earned the win in just her second game of the year with seven saves. Jones finished the game with 10 saves for Providence.

The Friars outshot Rutgers, 21-20. Rutgers held the advantage on penalty corners, 12-10.

Providence (6-8, 0-2 BIG EAST) will return to action against Cornell in a non-conference match-up on Sunday, October 10 at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. The game is scheduled to begin at Noon.
