PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Providence College field hockey team defeated Vermont, 4-2, on Monday, October 8 in Burlington, Vt. Junior Caitlin Malone (Ossining, N.Y.) led the Friar offense with two goals and helped the squad even their record on the season at 6-6. Vermont drops to 1-11 overall.
The Friars took a 1-0 lead with 8:24 to play in the first half as sophomore Henni Tietze (Sankt Augustin, Germany) converted a penalty stroke. Tietze earned the opportunity after sophomore Daniella Bernasconi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) carried the ball into the left side of the circle and was taken down by the goalkeeper. It marked Tietze's second penalty stroke of the season, and she has converted each of them for goals.
Vermont tied the game 6:02 into the second half (1-1) as Kelsey Bonner deflected in a goal at the left post off a feed from Whitlee Burghardt. Malone put the Friars back on top (2-1) with 24:52 remaining in regulation as she found the upper right hand side of the net on a reverse stick shot. Sophomore Steph Guglielmo (Castle Rock, Colo.) made it a two-goal advantage (3-1) as she connected off a penalty corner with 17:35 to play. Sophomore Kaleigh FitzPatrick (Dedham, Mass.) was credited with the assist.
A minute later, Vermont stormed back with its second goal of the game, which was another deflection by Bonner. Bonner's goal made it a 3-2 game, still in favor of the Friars. However, Malone gave the Friars some insurance with her second field goal of the day, unassisted, with 3:01 remaining in the game.
The Friars return to action on Saturday, October 13 against BIG EAST foe Villanova at 1:00 p.m. The game will be played in Villanova, Pa.
