VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated BIG EAST foe Villanova, 3-0, on Saturday, October 4 in Villanova, Pa. Three different players cracked the scoring column for the Friars, while goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) posted her fourth shut-out victory of the season with four saves.

Junior Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) gave the Friars a 1-0 lead that extended into halftime as she knocked in her team-best eighth goal of the year off a feed from sophomore Ashlyn Hudson (Stoughton, Mass.).

In the second half, the Friars took control of the game with two unanswered goals from junior Adrienne Marois (Auburn, Mass.) and sophomore Julie Ruggieri (Barrington, R.I.). Marois tallied her goal in the 42nd minute, while Ruggieri connected with just 2:10 left in the game.

Villanova held a 10-9 advantage in shots during the game, but the Friars held the edge in shots on goal (6-4). The Wildcats registered eight penalty corners, while the Friars earned seven.

Chamberlain recorded her fourth shut-out victory of the season with four saves. It also marked the 16th shut-out of her career. Maura McCormick posted three saves for the Wildcats.

Providence (8-4, 1-2 BIG EAST) returns to action on Sunday, October 5 against 12th-ranked Princeton in non-conference action. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. in Princeton, N.J.
