No. 19 Providence Field Hockey Defeats Villanova, 4-2

Providence, R.I. - The No. 19 Providence College field hockey team defeated Villanova University, 4-2, in BIG EAST Conference play on Saturday, October 3 at the Friar Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. The Friars improve to 4-6 on the season and 1-2 in the BIG EAST, while Villanova falls to 6-3 and 1-1 in the league. In the first half senior, Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) scored the first goal of the game, unassisted, off a rebound at the 25:52 mark. Villanova quickly tied the game, 1-1, when Meg Ryan deflected a crossing pass into the circle from Meredith Sabatini . In the closing seconds of the first half, senior defender Adrienne Marois (Auburn, Mass) scored a goal on an assist from Jaime Lipski (Dallas, Pa.). The goal came out of a penalty corner. With Marois' goal, the Friars took a 2-1 lead into halftime. In the second half, Ryan put in her second goal of the game at the 34:48 mark on an assist from Lauren Wuzzardo to knot the game at 2-2. Marois was able to score again at the 48:43 mark, unassisted, on a penalty corner play. The goal proved to be the game winner. Poulin provided some insurance for the Friars when she scored her second goal of the game at 51:40 off a rebound. Senior goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlan (Branford, Conn.) recorded her fourth win of the season for the Friars with one save. Providence College held the advantage in shots 32-5 as well as penalty corners 19-3. Twenty-one of the Friars' shots were on goal. Villanova goalkeeper Megan Goelz finished the afternoon with 17 saves.
The Friars return to action on Monday, October, 5 when they travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to face No. 10 Boston College at 7:00 p.m. |
