Providence College Field Hockey Falls To No. 8 Syracuse, 3-0

    PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team fell to No. 8 Syracuse, 3-0, on Saturday, October 2. The game was played at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I.

    Early in the first half of play both teams had opportunities to score but were unable to convert on any of them. It appeared as though the game would remain scoreless entering halftime until Syracuse was awarded a penalty corner with no time remaining on the clock. Out of the corner Martina Loncarica scored a goal to give the Orange a 1-0 edge. The goal was deflected in off a shot by Leonie Geyer, who was credited with the assist.

    Syracuse would add two more goals in the second half. The first was an unassisted goal by Liz McInerney in the 58th minute. Later in the half, with under ten minutes remaining in the game, Loncarica scored her second goal of the game to give the Orange a 3-0 lead.

    Sophomore goalkeeper Kathi Weidman (Millersville, Pa.) recorded six saves on the day for the Friars.

    Syracuse held the advantage in shots, 16-2, and in penalty corners, 8-0.

    The Friars return to action on Sunday, October 3 against 17th-ranked Albany at 2:00 p.m. The game will be played at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I.
