PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated 13th-ranked Boston College, 2-1, in double-overtime on Wednesday, October 1 at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. Sophomore forward Ashlyn Hudson (Stoughton, Mass.) recorded the game winning goal in the 91st minute of play to help PC earn its first victory of the season over a ranked foe. It marks the second-straight victory for Providence over Boston College, having defeated the Eagles a year ago, 3-0, in Providence, R.I. The Friars got on the board to take a 1-0 lead just 3:10 into the game as junior defender Adrienne Marois (Auburn, Mass.) connected on Providence's first shot attempt of the evening during a penalty corner. Junior midfielder Meghan Holden (Worcester, Mass.) was credited with the assist. Boston College tied the game in the 19th minute as Bob Dirks carried the ball across the circle from left to right, turned and fired a shot into the cage, unassisted. The Eagles held a slim advantage in shots in the opening half (5-3) and penalty corners (3-2). In the second half, Boston College held a 5-3 advantage in shots, once again, but the two teams remained tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation. The two teams competed for an additional 15 minutes in the first overtime period, still to be deadlocked, as each team managed to attempt two shots. In the second overtime period, Hudson gave the Friars the victory in the 91st minute of play (9:08 remaining on the clock) as she collected a loose ball off at the left post and fired a low shot into the right corner of the cage. The loose ball situation occurred when Hudson tried to cross the ball across the circle and was cleared out by BC's goalkeeper. The goal was unassisted.
Junior goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) registered two saves in the victory, while Boston College goalkeeper Julia Berkowitz collected three saves. Providence returns to action on Saturday, October 4 against BIG EAST foe Villanova in Villanova, Pa. The Friars follow with a contest at Princeton on Sunday, October 5 in Princeton, N.J. - FRIARS -
