NORFOLK, Va. - The Providence College field hockey team fell to BIG EAST foe Old Dominion, 2-1, in overtime on Friday, September 27 in Norfolk, Va. It marked the third meeting all-time between the two teams, and first since ODU joined the BIG EAST Conference as an associate member for field hockey. Providence falls to 4-5 overall on the season and 1-1 in the BIG EAST, while Old Dominion, who recently dropped out of the national rankings, improves to 3-6 (1-1 BIG EAST). Providence is 1-2 this season in overtime matches.
The Friars fired off the first three shot attempts of the game, but ODU got on the board first, for a 1-0 lead, at 14:49 as Sarah Breen scored off a direct shot on a penalty corner. Rosario Villagra and Kesley Smither were credited with assists on the play. Providence fought off two Monarch penalty corners to close the first half, to keep it a one-goal game at halftime.
Providence wasted little time in the second half as it tied the game, 1-1, just 1:18 into the action. Junior Daniella Bernasconi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) was credited with the goal, her 10th of the season, on a deflection during a penalty corner. Junior Henni Tietze (Sankt Augustin, Germany) earned the assist on the play. The game remained knotted, 1-1, upon completion of regulation and the two teams headed to overtime.
ODU claimed victory just 1:18 into the extra session as Breen picked up her second goal of the match, unassisted, as she converted on a breakaway.
The Friars return to action with back-to-back home games against Brown University and BIG EAST foe Connecticut. The match-up versus Brown is scheduled for Wednesday, October 2 at 7:00 p.m. Providence will host No. 3 Connecticut on Saturday, October 5 at 12:30 p.m. The match will be streamed live on the College's athletic website at www.Friars.com.
