PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team fell to fourth-ranked Connecticut, 4-0, on September 24 at Lennon Field in Providence, R.I.
Connecticut got on the scoreboard just 3:13 into the game as Anne Jeute picked up a loose ball off a feed from Marie Elena Bolles and knocked it passed Providence's goalkeeper. At 15:39, Chloe Hunnable gave the Huskies a 2-0 margin as she connected on a direct shot off a penalty corner. Assists were credited to Bolles and Chrissy Davidson.
Providence had numerous chances in the opening half to cut the deficit, including a chance on a penalty stroke with 3:04 remaining in the half. The opportunity would have pulled the Friars within a score of 2-1, but the attempt sailed just right of the cage. The Huskies were then able to mount a 3-0 lead heading into halftime as Hunnable tipped in a ball at the right post off a pass from Bolles.
UConn held a 10-7 advantage in shots for the first half, including a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. UConn also recorded six penalty corners to Providence's two.
In the second half, the Huskies tacked on one more goal to make the final score, 4-0. UConn outshot the Friars in the half, 5-0, and held a 3-0 advantage on penalty corners. Hunnable was credited with UConn's lone goal of the second half, just 10:36 into the action. After receiving a pass on corner play from Jestine Angelini, Hunnable knocked in the score from the right side of the circle.
Providence (2-7) returns to action on Friday, September 30 against fifth-ranked Syracuse in a BIG EAST regular-season match-up. The game is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. in Syracuse, N.Y.
