Field Hockey Opens BIG EAST Schedule With 3-0 Victory At Georgetown
Sept. 20, 2006
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The 16th-ranked Providence College field hockey team opened the 2006 BIG EAST Conference schedule with a 3-0 victory over Georgetown on Wednesday, September 20 at Kehoe Field in Washington, D.C. Senior Jessica Weinstein (Bridgeton, N.J.) led the Friars with two goals, marking her first points of the 2006 season. Providence improves to 8-1 overall and 1-0 in the BIG EAST Conference. Georgetown falls to 2-5 on the season and 0-1 in league action. Weinstein tallied both of her goals in the first half to give PC a 2-0 advantage going into halftime. Her first came just 7:10 into the game off a feed from freshman Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine). She followed with her second goal at the 13:44 mark, which also was assisted by Poulin. With her two assists, Poulin moves into a tie for second on the team in scoring with 11 points (four goals, three assists). Sophomore Meghan Holden (Worcester, Mass.) tallied PC's third goal of the afternoon in the 65th minute of play. She found the back of the cage, unassisted, with a hard shot from the top of the circle. Freshman goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) recorded her fifth shut-out victory of the season for the Friars with five saves. The last time Providence shutout a BIG EAST opponent was on October 24, 2004 when the Friars defeated Villanova by a score of 5-0. Deirdre Crovo took the loss in goal for Georgetown. She made five saves on the day. Providence's victory over Georgetown marks the first win in a BIG EAST opener for the Friars since 1997, when the team defeated UConn, 3-2, that season. Since that win, PC had lost eight-straight BIG EAST openers.
Providence (8-1) returns to action on Saturday, September 23 against non-conference foe Maine. The game is scheduled to be played at 9:30 a.m. in Orono, Maine.
