WORCESTER, MASS. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated Vermont, 3-2, at Hart Center Astro Turf in Worcester, Mass. on Saturday, September 18. Senior forward Amy Phillips (Worcester, Mass.) scored two goals for the Friars including the eventual game winner. Sophomore Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.) notched one goal and added one assist in the win.

The Friars were the only team to score in the first half as Phillips netted her first goal of the game with 32:07 showing on the clock. McGow was credited with the assist. Providence outshot Vermont, 12-3, in the opening session.
 

 

In the second half, Vermont tied the game, 1-1, as Danielle Collins found the back of the cage off of a pass from Christie Layden at the 25:55 mark. The Friars retaliated just 2:43 later (24:12) as McGow scored, unassisted. Phillips put the Friars up, 3-1, with her second goal of the game with 18:30 remaining. Phillips' goal proved to be the eventual game winner.

Vermont staged a late comeback, as Collins netted her second goal of the game on an assist from Layden with 3:51 left on the clock. However, the rally fell short and the Friars held on to the 3-2 win.

Senior goalkeeper Meredith Jones (Lake Forest, Ill.) picked up her third win this season with three saves. Vemont goalkeeper Erin Hickey stopped eight shots in the losing effort. For the game, Providence outshot Vermont, 21-8, and held the advantage on penalty corners, 6-2.

Providence (3-5) will return to action on Tuesday, September 21 as it opens BIG EAST Conference action against Boston College. The game will be played at Bentley College in Waltham, Mass. and is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
