Final Stats

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated in-state rival Rhode Island, 2-0, at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. on Wednesday, September 12. It marks the fourth-straight win for the Friars as the team improves to 4-2 overall. Rhode Island drops to 4-1 on the year.

Providence first got on the board at the 17:42 mark when Jessica Lane sent a free hit into the circle where Joscelyn Mahon (Shavertown, Pa.) deflected the ball past URI goalkeeper M.J. Britt for the 1-0 advantage. Six minutes later, Michalagh Stoddard (Norwood, Mass.) scored the Friars' second goal off a penalty corner which was inserted by Meghan Holden (Worcester, Mass.) and stopped by Jessica Lane (South Windsor, Conn.). Holden and Lane were credited with assists.

Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) made just one save in her second shut-out victory of the season and ninth of her career. Britt registered 11 saves for the Rams.

The Friars outshot the Rams, 18-5, including a 13-1 edge in shots on goal. Rhode Island held the advantage in penalty corners, 4-3.

Providence returns to action on Saturday, September 15 against BIG EAST foe Georgetown. The game is scheduled for Noon and will be played at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The match-up between the Friars and Hoyas marks the BIG EAST opener for both teams.
