PROVIDENCE ,R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated non-conference foe Holy Cross, 4-0, on Wednesday, September 4 at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. Junior forward Daniella Bernasconi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) recorded her first career hat trick in the victory. Junior goalkeeper Deidra Clymer (South Windsor, Conn.) posted her first career shut-out with one save.
The Friars picked up back-to-back scores by Bernasconi at 3:30 and 12:08 of the first half to take a 2-0 lead. The first goal was a tip-in off a feed from freshman Adrienne Houle (Burlington, Ontario). Bernasconi's second tally of the night came off a rebound. Houle took the initial shot on goal, which was saved by the Holy Cross goalkeeper, and Bernasconi collected the rebound and slipped the ball into the cage.
Junior midfielder Kaleigh FitzPatrick (Dedham, Mass.) gave the Friars a 3-0 lead at the 30:22 mark. Freshman Emily Humiston (Pittsburgh, Pa.) carried the ball into the circle and hit FitzPatrick with a pass at the top right of the circle. FitzPatrick then struck a hard low shot into the right side of the cage. Humiston was credited with the assist. The Friars took their 3-0 lead into halftime.
Bernasconi completed the hat trick just 2:03 into the second half as she redirected a pass from junior Steph Guglielmo (Castle Rock, Colo.) during a corner.
Providence out-shot the Crusaders, 17-2, and held an 8-0 advantage in penalty corners.
The Friars return to action on Sunday, September 8 against Northeastern at 1:00 p.m. The game will be played at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I.
