LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated Rider, 5-4, in overtime on Sunday, August 31 in Lawrenceville, N.J. The Friars recovered from a 3-1 deficit and forced overtime as sophomore Katharine Lary (Caanaan, N.H.) netted her second goal of the game with no time remaining in regulation on a penalty corner. Freshman Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.) was credited with the game-winning goal, the first goal of her collegiate career, during the overtime session.

Rider opened the game with a 1-0 lead on a goal from Christina Ang just 3:09 into the first half of play. Lary tied the game, 1-1, on an assist from senior Maura Desfosses (Plymouth, N.H.) in the first half. Rider was then awarded a penalty stroke opportunity and Stephanie Corrandina converted the goal to give the Broncs a 2-1 advantage. Courtney Bertos then scored a goal of her own to give Rider a 3-1 lead.

The Friars rallied to score two unassisted goals in a 10-minute span to tie the game, 3-3. Junior Amy Phillips (Worcester, Mass.) connected on the first goal off an assist from McGow, followed by a goal from Stefanie Suehnholz (Flemington, N.J.) on a penalty stroke to even the score.

Rider once again took the lead with just 2:15 left in regulation as Ashley Boulden netted the Broncs final goal of the day, before PC forced overtime as the game clock expired.

In the overtime session, McGow picked up a loose ball near midfield and slipped the ball past Rider goalkeeper Krysta Bearish with a one-on-one move for the Friar victory. Bearish took the loss in goal for the Broncs with four saves. Providence goalkeeper Meaghan Moran (Framingham, Mass.) earned the victory with eight saves.
