Field Hockey Defeats Vermont In Season Opener, 3-1

STORRS, CONN. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated Vermont, 3-1, on Saturday, August 31 as part of the Husky Classic in Storrs, Connecticut. The game marked the season opener for the Friars, who finished the 2001 season with an 11-8 overall record. It also marked the first career victory for first-year head coach Diane Madl, who was named head coach of the field hockey program in February. Madl spent the last nine seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Maine. Junior Kelly Romanowicz (Shrewsbury, Mass.) gave the Friars a 1-0 lead 16:44 into the first half of play. Romanowicz's goal was assisted by senior Courtney Dow (Hampstead, N.H.). The Friars held the lead into halftime, before the Kristin MacDonald scored for Vermont 3:45 into the second half. Senior Kelly Piwinski (Seabrook, N.H.) scored the eventual game-winning goal for Providence with 12:41 remaining in the game off an assist from Romanowicz. Senior Jennifer Chin (Norwood, Mass.) added an insurance goal with 30 seconds remaining in the game to give the Friars a 3-1 victory. Junior Meaghan Moran (Framingham, Mass.) made two saves in goal for Providence in 70 minutes of action. Holly Colberg registered 10 saves in goal for Vermont, who falls to 0-1 on the season. Providence (1-0) will play Hofstra (1-0) on Sunday, September 1 in the second game of the Husky Classic in Storrs, Conn. The game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (EST).
