Field Hockey Drops 8-1 Decision Against California
Aug. 29, 2004 BERKELEY, Calif. - The Providence College field hockey team was defeated, 8-1, by California on Sunday, August 29, 2004 in Berkeley, Calif. With the loss, Providence drops to 0-2 overall on the season, while Cal improves to 2-0. Junior Kati Lary (Canaan, N.H.) scored her second goal of the season for the Friars during the game on a penalty corner. Sophomore Lauren Sickel (Plaistow, N.H.) took the initial shot on the corner and earned the assist as Lary deflected the ball into the cage. California held a 4-0 lead at halftime and scored four more goals in the second half to win the game, 8-1. Valentina Godfrid, Amber Madsen and Jenny Crane scored two goals each for the Bears in the victory. Senior goalkeeper Meredith Jones (Lake Forest, Ill.) falls to 0-2 on the season in the cage. Jones recorded 11 saves and allowed eight goals in 70 minutes of action. Cal's Kelly Knapp made three saves and allowed one goal. California outshot Providence 26-8. Each team earned 10 penalty corners. Seven of PC's 10 corners came in the second half. The Friars conclude their West Coast trip with a game against Stanford on Tuesday, August 31 in Stanford University, Calif. The game is schedule to begin at 4:00 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time).
