Field Hockey Falls To 22nd-Ranked Maine, 3-2, In Overtime

    ORONO, Maine - The Providence College field hockey team took the 22nd-ranked Maine to overtime on Tuesday, August 28, but fell to the Black Bears by a score of 3-2. Maine recorded the game-winning goal on a penalty corner with 7:43 remaining in overtime.

    The Black Bears took a 1-0 lead 5:11 into the first half as Jessica Skillings netted her first tally of the season off a feed from Holly Stewart. The Friars tied the score, 1-1, in the 20th minute as junior Brittany Ross (Scarborough, Maine) found the back of the cage after collecting a loose ball in front of the goalkeeper. Maine regained the lead in the 34th minute as Stewart knocked in a rebound off of the goalkeeper's pads. The Black Bears maintained their 2-1 lead into halftime.

    In the second half, the Friars tied the game, 2-2, in the 64th minute as sophomore Daniella Bernasconi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) tipped in an initial shot taken by sophomore Steph Guglielmo (Castle Rock, Colo.). Guglielmo's shot came during a penalty corner and she was credited with the assist on the play. Bernasconi's goal eventually forced overtime as regulation ended in a 2-2 tie.

    The Friars return to action on Friday, August 31 against 14th-ranked Boston University. It marks the Friars' home opener at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
