PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
First-year Providence College Head Coach Susan Robinson Fruchtl has named two captains for the 2012-13 women's basketball season. Assuming leadership roles for the Friars will be senior point guard Symone Roberts (New Britain, Conn.) and senior forward Brianna Edwards (Minneapolis, Minn.).
Roberts finished the 2011-12 season third among her teammates in scoring (8.2 ppg) and assists (2.14 apg), first in steals (1.86 spg) and fourth in rebounding (3.2 rpg). She also led the team in free-throw percentage, having connected on 48-of-59 attempts from the charity stripe (.814). In the Friars' recent exhibition game vs. Rhode Island College (11/3), Roberts recorded 18 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
"Symone clearly has the most experience of any player on our team," Robinson Fruchtl said. "The expectation is high for Symone as a leader and she will be looked upon to step up and direct her teammates as the team's point guard. She is essentially an extension of the coaching staff, and that holds great responsibility."
Edwards kicked off the 2012-13 season with an impressive performance in exhibition play against Rhode Island College. She notched a double-double with 26 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Edwards hit 11-of-15 attempts from the field (.733), and seven of her 13 boards came off the offensive glass. Last season, she played 30 games for the Friars and appeared in the starting line-up four times. She averaged 2.4 points and 2.7 rebounds per game.
"Bri has emerged as the most vocal leader," Robinson Fruchtl said. "She plays the game hard and is very aggressive. She also brings an emotional energy to the floor when she is competing. Collectively, we'll look to Symone and Brianna's experience and wisdom as senior leaders of this team."
Providence opens the 2012-13 regular-season schedule on Friday, November 9 against Drexel University. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. At halftime, the College will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand re-opening of Alumni Hall.
