National Grid Foundation and Athletics Team Up For the Hoops for the Stars Program

Nov. 7, 2012

On Friday, November 2, 2012 Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach Bob Simon and Director of Women's Basketball Administration Jen Wasson visited the Robert F. Kennedy Elementary School in Providence, R.I., to kick-off the 2012-2013 National Grid Foundation Hoops for the Stars Program.

Hoops for the Stars is a partnership program with the National Grid Foundation and Providence College Athletics.  The program provides inner-city students with the opportunity to earn tickets to Providence College men’s basketball games in return for hard work in the classroom and positive behavior in the community.

The 2012-13 season marks the fifth consecutive year that the National Grid Foundation has teamed up with Providence College Athletics for this program.  The program has expanded over the years thanks to additional support from the National Grid Foundation.  This year, more than 5,500 tickets will be provided to inner-city schools, and students will have the opportunity to participate in a city wide essay contest.  The winner will receive a surprise visit to their school from Men’s Basketball Head Coach Ed Cooley and Women’s Basketball Head Coach, Susan Robinson-Fruchtl.

Praise from the Providence School District for the Hoops for the Stars Program.

“Special thanks to the National Grid Foundation for sponsoring the Hoops for the Stars Program. This program allows us the opportunity to provide incentives such as tickets to PC athletic games, hats and bracelets for students that demonstrate respect, responsibility, achievement and success. Providence College students and athletes volunteer in our school daily as mentors demonstrating what it means to be a ‘star.’  Together with Providence College and the National Grid Foundation, our students aspire to be ‘stars’!” Susan DeAthos, Principal at Robert F. Kennedy Elementary School

“The continued support from the National Grid Foundation and Providence College Athletics has enabled us to make the Hoops for the Stars Program an incentive that both our teachers and students can count on every year.  The impact that this program has on our students is profound and I am thrilled that they can be rewarded with the opportunity to see a Providence College basketball game.” Marc Catone, Executive Director of Middle Level Education in Providence
