NEW YORK, N.Y. -
Providence College junior guard Tori Rule (Minneapolis, Minn.) was named to the 2013-14 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team on Wednesday, October 16. The announcement was made by the BIG EAST Conference office at the league's annual media day, held at The Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers in New York City.
Rule was among the list of 10 players honored on the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, which features players from nine of the leagues 10-member schools. DePaul's Brittany Hrynko was tabbed as the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year, while Georgetown's Shayla Cooper was named BIG EAST Preseason Rookie of the Year.
Rule is the Friars' leading returning scorer from the 2012-13 season, during which she averaged 14.4 points per game. Rule also contributed 3.9 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.2 steals per contest. She notched double figures in the scoring column during 23 of the Friars' 30 games, including 13 of 16 BIG EAST Conference regular-season games.
Rule eclipsed the 20-point plateau five times on the year, including two games with 30+ points. She notched a tournament record 32 points against Colorado State on December 29 in the first round of the Fordham Holiday Classic, en route to earning Fordham Holiday Classic Most Valuable Player honors. Her effort helped propel the Friars to their first in-season tournament title for the first time since 1992.
Rule exploded for a career-high 35 points against Georgetown in the first round of the 2013 BIG EAST Women's Basketball Championship on March 8 in Hartford, Conn. She is just the second Friar in program history to score 30+ points in BIG EAST Tournament action, and her 35 points marks the highest point total by a Friar during a single game in tournament history. Furthermore, Rule set a BIG EAST Tournament and Providence College single-game record after converting 10 three-point field goals vs. the Hoyas. She hit 10-of-20 three-point attempts in the game (0.500). Heading into the 2013-14 campaign, Rule will serve as a team captain.
Joining Rule on the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team is Daress McClung (Butler), Marissa Janning (Creighton), Sarah Nelson (Creighton), Jasmine Penny (DePaul), Andrea White (Georgetown), Katherine Plouffe (Marquette), Aliyyah Handford (St. John's), Ka-Deidre Simmons (Seton Hall) and Caroline Coyer (Villanova).
