Women's Basketball International Tour - Paris and Florence

Aug. 19, 2015

The Providence College women’s basketball team is currently participating in an international tour in France and Italy. The Friars departed Providence on August 11 and spent their first three days in Paris, France (Aug. 12-14) and two days in Florence, Italy (Aug. 15-16), before heading to Pesaro, Assisi and Rome to finish the tour.

While in Paris, the team, several players’ families and supporters of the program enjoyed a number of well-known sites, guided tours and activities.

On Aug. 12, the group enjoyed lunch on Champs Elysees, a welcome dinner in the city’s Latin Quarter and a Seine River Cruise.

The following day, the group took a guided tour of the Palace of Versailles and spent free time walking through the Palace’s expansive gardens. Later that day, everyone had the opportunity to explore the Latin Quarter on their own to shop and grab dinner. To say the least, the crepes were a HUGE hit!

After dinner, the group took a three-hour Fat Tire Bike Tour of the city, and finished the night with a trip to the Eiffel Tower.

On the final day in Paris (Aug. 14), the group toured the Louvre and saw some very famous works of art, including the Mona Lisa, The Sphinx, Venus de Milo, Winged Victory of Samothrace, The Raft of Medusa and the Portrait of Baldassare Castiglione.

The Friars finished the day with a pre-game meal before competing in their first exhibition game vs. the AMW All-Stars. Aliyah Miller paced the Friars with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field, while Sarah Beal contributed 13 points. Providence fell to the AMW All-Stars, 72-55.

The team took a short flight to Florence, Italy the following morning where they stayed for two days (Aug. 15-16).

While in Florence, the group took a walking tour of the city, shopped for handbags in the outdoor markets and jewelry in the shops located in the Ponte Vecchio. One of the most amazing sights was the Duomo di Firenze, otherwise known as Florence Cathedral.

On the final day in Florence, the Friars played the Cameroon National Team and were defeated 72-55. Alison Lewis tallied a team-high 10 points. Freshmen Clara Che and Yoyo Nogic contributed nine points each. Che dished a team-high three assists and hit 3-4 attempts from beyond the three-point arc. Nogic shot 3-6 from the field overall, including 3-3 from three-point range.

Allegra Botteghi and Aliyah Miller each hauled in a team-best five rebounds. Botteghi, Lewis and Sarah Beal each collected two steals.

After the game, the Friars traveled by bus to Pesaro, which is a beach/resort town on the Adriatic Coast of Italy.

Information on the team’s activities in Pesaro (Aug. 17-18) and its final three days on tour in Rome (Aug. 19-21) will be posted at the conclusion of the trip - along with a photo gallery.
