PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
Providence College women's basketball Head Coach Susan Robinson Fruchtl
announced today [Aug. 12], that student-athlete Allegra Botteghi (Bologna, Italy) will attend Providence and compete for the women's basketball program, beginning in the fall of 2014. Botteghi has played for Reyer Venezia since 2010, and also competed in the 2013 U-18 European Women's Championship (Division A) for Italy.
Botteghi, a 6-foot guard, played nine games for the Italians at the U-18 European Championships and averaged 10 minutes, 3.7 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. She shot 38.9-percent from the field (7-18), 30.8-percent from three-point territory (4-13) and 77.8-percent from the free-throw line (7-9). In her best performance at the Championships, she recorded 13 points and eight rebounds in a 72-49 victory over Sweden.
For Reyer Venezia, Botteghi averaged 18.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.8 steals per game. She helped Reyer Venezia capture the National Championship in 2013. Botteghi recently attended the Spire Institute, which is a residential basketball academy in Geneva, Ohio.
"I am really excited about Allegra joining our Friar Family this fall," Robinson Fruchtl said. "Allie brings a great deal of international basketball experience and much needed versatility to our program. Allie is a scoring guard who has great court vision, and is a well-rounded person with a great sense of humor. I expect Allie to have a big impact on our team and her personality will be a great fit as well. I want to thank Jacquie Fernandes, her coach at Spire Institute and a former player at UConn, and Daniel Prince for their assistance in the recruiting process. We welcome Allegra and her family to Friartown."
Providence College will open its 2014-15 regular-season schedule at the University of Richmond on November 14.
