Evi Iiskola Commits To Providence College Women's Basketball

July 27, 2012

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College Head Women's Basketball Coach Susan Robinson Fruchtl announced on July 27 that student-athlete Evi Iiskola has committed to attend the College and play basketball for the Friars. Iiskola, a member of Finland's Women's National Team, will join the program for the 2012-13 season.

Iiskola, a 6'-0" forward, hails from Espoo, Finland. She is the first foreign-born player to compete for the Friar women's basketball team since Aga Lorenc '08 (Lubycza, Poland).

"We are really excited that Evi is a Friar! She has a great deal of international playing experience and this will help us in the grind of the BIG EAST," Robinson Fruchtl said. "Evi is someone who stood out to us when we arrived at Providence and we worked hard to sign her for the 2012-2013 season. Her versatility will be a key for our team as we work to lay a solid foundation for this program. We expect her to have a quick impact on our program in many ways."

In addition to playing for the National Team (2011-12), Iiskola also has competed for her club team, Tapiolan Honka (2000-12), Espoo Women's League Team (2008-12), U-16 National Team (2008-09) and the U-18 National Team (2010-11). She has competed in a total of 102 international games during her career.

Iiskola saw action in 17 games for the National Team during 2011-12, and averaged 4.5 points and 1.8 rebounds per game. In her most recent stint with the U-18 National team, she played nine games and averaged 15.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per contest. In 24 games with Espoo this season, Iiskola averaged 9.0 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.

In 2009, Iiskola helped guide her team to the Division A European Championships and was named a Third-Team All-Star. At the conclusion of the 2010-11 campaign, Iiskola was nominated as the most developed player in the Finnish Women's League. She also earned All-Star recognition at the 2011 European Division B Championships. Most recently, she was nominated by Tapiolan Honka for Player of the Year honors at the conclusion of the 2011-12 season.

Iiskola joins Lexi Sells (Attleboro, Mass.) as the only freshmen on the Friars' roster for the 2012-13 season. Sells, an All-State selection, comes to Providence via Bishop Feehan High School, and was ranked in the Top-100 by ESPN Hoopgurlz. Sells committed to the Friars during the early signing period.
