PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
Providence College women's basketball player Evi Iiskola (Espoo, Finland) will play for Finland's Women's National Team during the EuroBasket Women 2015 2nd Qualification Round. The 2nd Qualification Round will see 22 teams compete for the 11 remaining spots available for EuroBasket Women in June 2015. The teams are divided into four groups of four and two groups of three. Finland will play in Group D with Germany, Montenegro and Ukraine.
Iiskola is a rising junior at Providence College, and averaged 9.4 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists during the 2013-14 season. She finished the season ranked first among her teammates in field-goal percentage (.467, 91-195), free-throw percentage (.779, 74-95) and three-point percentage (.390, 16-41). Iiskola finished the season with a career-high 21 points vs. Seton Hall in the first round of the BIG EAST Women's Basketball Championship (3/8/14). Iiskola shot better than 50-percent in 16 of the Friars' 30 games, including five games at 70-percent or better.
"This is a great opportunity for Evi this summer to represent her country," Providence College Head Coach Susan Robinson Fruchtl said. "This experience will really help her development, and we anticipate that she'll come back even stronger and more prepared for her season at Providence. It's really a win-win. To play for your country is a great honor, and the experience she will gain is invaluable."
Each team will play every other team in its group on a home and away basis with the six group winners and five second-best placed teams joining the field for EuroBasket Women 2015, hosted by Hungary and Romania. The teams that have already qualified are the two host nations (Hungary and Romania); Greece who won the EuroBasket 2015 Women 1st Qualification Round; and Spain, France, Turkey, Serbia, Belarus and the Czech Republic.
During qualifying, the Ukrainian team will play its home games at the venues of its group opponents, due to concerns of the visiting federations about the continuing unrest in Ukraine. The 2nd Qualifying Round will be played June 8 - 25. Iiskola, a native of Espoo, Finland, has a wealth of experience with Finland during international competition. She competed for Finland's Women's National Team in 2011 and 2012. She also has competed for her country's U-16 (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009) and U-18 (2010, 2011) teams. She also has played for Tapiolan Honka (club).
