PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

Providence College Head Coach Phil Seymore announced on Wednesday, May 5 that Rachel Barnes has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Providence College and play for the women's basketball team beginning in the fall of 2010. Barnes will join Providence's recruiting class that is ranked No. 28 in the nation by All-Star Girls' Report.

Barnes, a 5-foot-9 wing guard, recently completed her sophomore year at Seward County Community College in Liberal, Kansas. During the 2009-10 season, Barnes averaged 21.3 points per game and finished third in the country in scoring. She also led the Jayhawk Conference in scoring and finished in the top four in field goal percentage, free throw percentage and rebounds. For her efforts, Barnes was named First Team All-NJCAA All American, Region VI Player of the Year and Jayhawk Conference Player of the Year.

"Rachel will be a great addition to the Providence College family," Seymore said. "At her size, she has a knack of how to score and draw fouls around the basket," Seymore added. "Rachel is a tough competitor who is an excellent rebounder. She also possesses the ability to knock down the three point shot. We look forward to Rachel having a bright future here at Providence College."
