PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
Providence College began renovations this week, which will amount to a complete overhaul of Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium. Alumni Hall was built in the early 1950's and hosted its first men's basketball game on December 3, 1955. The next 17 seasons saw the Friars post an impressive 179-27 (.869) record before moving the team to the Providence Civic Center in 1972.
Alumni Hall currently serves as the primary practice facility for men's basketball, while the women's basketball and volleyball teams use the gym for practices and games.
The renovation project will help make Alumni Hall a state-of-the-art facility, falling in line with a variety of construction and renovation projects that have been completed over the last several years, including the Jimmy Walker Strength and Conditioning Center, Concannon Fitness Center and Canavan Sports Medicine Center.
The project includes a new ceiling, air conditioning and heating systems, upper level windows, new seating in the upper and lower arena. The entire communications and data systems will be overhauled and a video scoreboard will be installed, along with an enhanced audio system for public address and in-game entertainment needs.
"The significant improvements and upgrades that we are making within the footprint of Alumni Hall will finally give our men's basketball, women's basketball and volleyball teams a first class competitive environment," Providence College Athletics Director Robert G. Driscoll said. "This renovation project puts us on par with other major NCAA Division I facilities across the nation, and we are excited to see the finished project. It also is expected to bolster our efforts on the recruiting trail."
The athletics department will chronicle the renovation with a video and photo time line as the project progresses, through its completion.
The Alumni Hall renovation project is one of a series of infrastructure upgrades associated with Providence College's new strategic plan. Private support is key to funding these initiatives and those interested in donating to the Alumni Hall renovation should contact Associate Athletic Director for External Relations Steve Napolillo at (401) 865-2677.
