    PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team will begin play at the 2013 BIG EAST Conference Women's Basketball Championship on Friday, March 8 at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. The Friars enter tournament play as the No. 14 seed, and will face No. 11 seed Georgetown Hoyas at 8:00 p.m.

    During the regular season, Georgetown defeated Providence, 79-64, in the BIG EAST season opener on January 5 in Providence, R.I. Sugar Rodgers led the Hoyas with a triple-double, having recorded 33 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists. Senior guard Symone Roberts (New Britain, Conn.) led the Friars with 18 points, six assists and four steals. Sophomore Alexis Harris(Detroit, Mich.) hauled in a team-best 10 rebounds for Providence.

    The Friars and Hoyas were tied, 36-36, at halftime. Georgetown opened the second half with a 25-9 run, which gave the Hoyas a 16 point lead with 9:39 left to play (61-45). The Friars got within eight points of the Hoyas with 3:41 remaining, but that was as close as they would get. Georgetown closed the game on a 12-5 run and held its largest lead (17 points) with 18-seconds remaining in regulation.

    Providence is 5-0 all-time vs. Georgetown in BIG EAST Tournament play. The last time the two teams met in the BIG EAST Tournament dates back to March 6, 1993. On that day, the Friars earned an 82-81 win over the Hoyas.

    The Friars are seeking their first BIG EAST Tournament victory since 2001. That season, the No. 11 seed Friars defeated No. 6 seed Seton Hall, 72-61, in the first round on March 3, 2001. Providence fell to third-seeded Rutgers in the quarterfinals, 69-58.

    The winner of Friday's first-round game will advance to the second round to face No. 6 seed Villanova on Saturday, March 9. The game is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. and will be televised live on the BIG EAST Network (BETV). Please check your local listings for availability.
