Women's Basketball Will Face Syracuse In Second Round Of BIG EAST Championship

The eighth-seeded Providence women's basketball team will face Syracuse on Saturday, March 6 at 2:00 p.m., in the second round of the BIG EAST Women's Basketball Championship. The ninth-seeded Orange defeated the 16th-seeded Pirates, 65-42, in the first round on March 5. The top-eight seeds in the BIG EAST Championship, including the Friars, in the first round. The top-four seeds earn an additional day's rest with a bye in the second round.

Providence defeated Syracuse, 71-69, during regular-season play on January 19 in Providence, R.I. The Friars were led offensively by three players in double figures. All-BIG EAST First-Team selection Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) led the Friars with a game-high 19 points and nine rebounds. Emily Cournoyer (North Attleboro, Mass.) chipped in 18 points and six boards. The Orange were led by Juanita Ward's 18 points.

Providence is 3-2 against Syracuse under the direction of fifth-year Head Coach Phil Seymore. The two teams have met 47 times during the history of the two programs and Providence owns a 31-16 advantage in the all-time series.

The Friars' game against Syracuse will be televised on BETV and also will be available on BIGEAST.tv. Beth Mowins will provide play-by-play, while Brooke Weisbrod will serve as the color analyst. Locally in Rhode Island, the game will be broadcast live on Cox Sports (Cox channel 3).

Other TV clearances at this time include: Comcast Sports Television New England (Live), ESPN Full Court, SportsNet New York (4:00 p.m.), Time Warner Cable Sports 32 (Live), Time Warner Cable Syracuse-Buffalo (Live Channel 1026) and FSN Pittsburgh (Midnight).

The winner of Saturday's game between Providence and Syracuse will advance to the Quarterfinals to face No. 1 Connecticut. The game will be played at 2:00 p.m. and will be televised live on ESPNU.
