Lauren "Lady" Okafor Named To BIG EAST All-Freshman Team

March 4, 2011

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The BIG EAST Conference released its regular-season women's basketball awards on March 3, prior to the start of the 2011 BIG EAST Women's Basketball Championship scheduled for March 4-8 in Hartford, Conn. Providence's Lauren "Lady" Okafor (New Haven, Conn.) was named to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team.

Okafor is one of 10 players from the league selected to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team, including Kayla Cook (Cincinnati), Jeanise Randolph (Cincinnati), Stefanie Dolson (Connecticut), Bria Hartley (Connecticut), Shoni Schimmel (Louisville), Sheronne Vails (Louisville), Katherine Plouffe (Marquette), Natalie Achonwa (Notre Dame) and Ka-Deidre Simmons (Seton Hall).

Okafor is the first Providence freshman to earn the honor since Mi-Khida Hankins (Baltimore, Md.) was named to the team during her rookie season in 2007-08.

Okafor has played in 26 of the Friars' 28 games this season. She enters BIG EAST Tournament play with averages of 3.7 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.0 blocked shot per game. Okafor recorded career highs with nine points and 11 rebounds against Rhode Island on November 17. She also hit for nine points against Alabama on November 27. The first-year player also swatted a career-best four blocked shots against Yale on December 1. Okafor owns 25 blocked shots on the season, which is one block shy of tying Emily Cournoyer `10 for third place all-time at Providence for blocks by a freshman.

The 11th-seeded Friars open BIG EAST Tournament play on March 4 at 8:00 p.m. against 14th-seeded Villanova. All games are scheduled to be played at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. The winner of the Providence vs. Villanova game will advance to the second round and face 6th-seeded Louisville on March 5 at 8:00 p.m.
