March 2, 2010

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team has earned the No. 8 seed in the 2010 BIG EAST Women's Basketball Championship, presented by New York Life Insurance Company. The championship is scheduled for March 5-9 at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. The Friars will play on Saturday, March 6 at 2:00 p.m., against the winner of the No. 9 seed Syracuse vs. No. 16 seed Seton Hall game. The Orange and Pirates will face one another on Friday, March 5 at 2:00 p.m.

The Friars concluded the regular-season schedule with a 16-13 overall record and a 7-9 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. Providence finished in a tie for eighth place in the league standings, but earned the No. 8 seed by virtue of its head-to-head win against Syracuse, who also finished 7-9.

It marks the Friars' highest finish in the BIG EAST since 2002, when the squad also finished eighth (7-9). Providence exceeded all expectations after being picked to finish 15th (of 16) in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll.

Connecticut won the regular-season title for the fourth-straight year and will be the No. 1 seed. The Huskies have won 18 out-right regular-season titles in their program's history.
