Women's Basketball To Face Villanova In First Round Of BIG EAST Women's Basketball Championship

The Providence College women's basketball team has claimed the 11-seed in the 2011 BIG EAST Women's Basketball Championship. The Friars will face Villanova, who enters tournament play as the 14-seed. The game is set for Friday, March 4 at 8:00 p.m., and will follow the No. 10 West Virginia vs. No. 15 Cincinnati game scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

Earlier in the afternoon on Friday, No. 12 Pittsburgh will take on No. 13 USF at Noon and No. 9 Syracuse will face No. 16 Seton Hall at 2:00 p.m. The tournament is scheduled to run from Friday, March 4 through Tuesday, March 8 at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. Friday's first-round games will be streamed live, free of charge, online by the BIG EAST Conference via bigeast.tv.

Providence and Villanova were paired as repeat opponents during the regular-season schedule. The Friars swept the regular-season series with the Wildcats. The teams first met on January 19 at The Pavilion in Villanova, Pa., where Providence took a 58-53 win. On February 9, the Friars earned a 58-49 victory at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. It marked the first time since 1997 that the Friars managed to claim back-to-back wins over Villanova.

The Friars enter the BIG EAST Women's Basketball Championship with a 13-15 overall record and completed the league schedule with a 6-10 mark. Villanova completed the regular-season schedule with an 11-18 record and a 3-13 mark in league action.

The winner of the Providence vs. Villanova first-round game will face 6th-seeded Louisville in the second round on Saturday, March 5 at 8:00 p.m. Providence earned a 63-61 victory over the Cardinals in the regular-season finale on Monday, February 28 in Providence, R.I. Senior forward Mi-Khida Hankins (Baltimore, Md.) hit the game-winning shot with 10-seconds remaining in regulation to help the Friars earn the win. Providence improved to 4-2 all-time vs. Louisville, snapping a three-game winless streak to the Cardinals.

Tickets can also be purchased at the XL Center ticket office beginning tomorrow at 10 a.m. The ticket office will open at 9 a.m. on Friday March 4th, Saturday March 5th, and Sunday March 6th. The ticket office will open at noon on Monday March 7th and Tuesday March 8th. All ticket purchases are subject to additional convenience fees.
