Chanell Williams Named To BIG EAST All-Freshman Team

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College rookie point guard Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) was named a unanimous selection to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team. The league announced its postseason awards and All-BIG EAST selections on Wednesday, Feb. 18.

Williams played all 30 games for the Friars and appeared in the starting line-up in each of the last 16 games. She averaged 6.9 points, 2.8 rebounds and a team-best 2.6 assists per game. During BIG EAST Conference play, Williams averaged 8.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.

She finished 12th in the BIG EAST in assists per game during regular-season conference play and 12th in assist/turnover ratio (1.13).

Williams is a two-time BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honoree (Jan. 8 and Jan. 22). She recorded nine double-digit scoring games for the Friars, including eight during BIG EAST action. The rookie tallied a career-high 16 points against Seton Hall on Jan. 5. She also posted career highs of seven rebounds vs. Seton Hall (Jan. 26), five assists vs. Yale (Nov. 29) and five steals vs. Marquette (Jan. 10).

Williams is the 17th player from Providence College to earn BIG EAST All-Freshman or All-Rookie Team honors, and the first since Sarah Beal in 2014.

Providence College opens BIG EAST Tournament play on Saturday, March 3 at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Ill. The Friars are the No. 9 seed in this year’s tournament, and they will face No. 8 seed Butler at 5:00 p.m. (ET).
