Chelsea Marandola Named To BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll

Feb. 15, 2010

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College senior guard Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) was named to the BIG EAST Conference Weekly Honor Roll for the second-straight week on February 15. It marks the third time this season she has earned the honor and eighth time in her career. Marandola was named BIG EAST Player of the Week for the first time in her career on December 7.

Last week, Marandola led the Friars to a 53-44 victory over BIG EAST foe Marquette on February 13. It marked the Friars' first BIG EAST road victory of the year as Marandola tallied 14 points, seven rebounds, two assists and one steal. The victory helped Providence improve to 14-10 overall and 5-6 in BIG EAST play.

The Friars' 14 victories are the most since the 1992-93 season, while their five wins in league play are the most since finishing 7-9 in 2001-02.

Marandola leads the Friars this season in scoring (17.8 ppg), rebounding (5.1 rpg), assists (2.29 apg) and steals (1.96 spg). She also is shooting 46.9-percent from the field (152-324), 45.5-percent from three-point territory (55-121) and 89.3-percent from the free-throw line (67-75). She has reached double figures in the scoring column in 23 of the Friars' 24 games in 2009-10.

Heading into Tuesday's game against Cincinnati, Marandola owns 1,608 career points and 602 career rebounds. She currently ranks sixth on Providence's all-time scoring list and 17th in rebounding. Marandola needs just 42 points to take over sole possession of fifth place on the all-time scoring list, currently held by Nadine Malcolm '97 (1,649 points).

The Friars host the Bearcats at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium on February 16 at 7:05 p.m.
