Jessica Simmonds Earns Co-BIG EAST Rookie Of The Week Honors In Women's Basketball
Feb. 11, 2002 PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Freshman forward/center Jessica Simmonds (South Orange, N.J.) earned BIG EAST Co-Rookie of the Week honors in women's basketball, for the week ending January 10. The announcement was made by the BIG EAST Conference on Monday, February 11, 2002. Simmonds was instrumental in helping the Friars to a 2-0 record last week, with wins over St. John's (62-51) and Syracuse (80-70). On February 6 versus St. John's, Simmonds registered the first double-double of her collegiate career with 10 points and 10 rebounds. She also recorded three blocks and three steals in that game. On February 9 versus Syracuse, Simmonds registered her second-consecutive double-double (and second of her career), with 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds, to go along with two steals and one blocked shot. On the week, Simmonds averaged 11 points, 11.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.0 blocks per game.
The Friars are currently 10-12 overall and 4-7 in the BIG EAST Conference, with five games remaining on the 2001-02 regular-season schedule. PC will host #20 Virginia Tech in BIG EAST play on Wednesday, February 13 at 7:00 p.m. The game is scheduled to be played at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I.
