PROVIDENCE SET TO FACE VILLANOVA... The Providence College women's basketball team will host Villanova on Sunday, Jan. 31 at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) via FOX Sports GO.
FAMILIAR FOE... The Friars have played the Wildcats 68 times during the history of the two women's basketball programs. It marks the most games vs. any opponent in program history.
PROVIDENCE VS. VILLANOVA ALL-TIME... The Friars and Wildcats have met 67 times during the all-time series. Villanova leads the all-time series vs. Providence, 42-26.
OVERTIME VS. THE WILDCATS... The Friars are 4-0 all-time vs. Villanova in games decided in overtime. The last time the two teams played in overtime dates back to Jan. 23, 2013. The Friars earned a 65-60 victory on that day.
LAST TIME PROVIDENCE DEFEATED VILLANOVA... The Friars last defeated Villanova on Dec. 2, 2014, having secured a 51-49 victory to open the BIG EAST regular-season schedule in Providence, R.I.
ALLEGRA BOTTEGHI SCORES SEASON-HIGH 10 POINTS IN FRIARS' LOSS TO GEORGETOWN... Sophomore Allegra Botteghi led the Friars with a season-high 10 points on Jan. 29 during an 82-51 loss to Georgetown. Botteghi registered each of her 10 points in the first half. She also finished the game with four rebounds - all off of the defensive glass. Her four defensive boards matched her career high.
MADDIE JOLIN SETTLING IN TO STARTING ROLE... Freshman Maddie Jolin has started each of the Friars' last five games. During the five-game stretch she has averaged 11.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game. Last weekend, she averaged 16.0 points vs. Marquette and No. 24/21 DePaul, hitting double-figures in the scoring column in back-to-back games for the first time in her career at PC. She netted a career-best 20 points vs. Marquette, and followed with a team-best 12 points and a career-high seven rebounds vs. nationally-ranked DePaul. In the Friars' most recent game, she tallied six points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal. In 20 games overall, Jolin is averaging 4.7 points, 1.5 boards and 1.2 steals per game.
SARAH BEAL DISHES 5+ ASSISTS IN A GAME FOR THE 27th TIME DURING HER CAREER... On Jan. 29, Sarah Beal led the Friars with five assists vs. Georgetown. It marks the 27th time during her career that she has recorded five-or-more assists in a game, and the sixth time this season. Beal has appeared in 63 games career games with the Friars and owns 264 assists (4.2 apg).
TRIO OF FRESHMEN LEAD THE WAY FROM THREE-POINT TERRITORY... Freshmen Jovana `Yoyo' Nogic, Clara Che and Maddie Jolin have combined to make 76 of the Friars' 92 three-point field goals this season, shooting a collective 76-194 (0.392) from beyond the arc. The rest of the team has combined to shoot 16-76 from three-point territory (0.211).
ERICA MEYER OWNS THIRD-HIGHEST BLOCK TOTAL BY A FRESHMAN IN PROGRAM HISTORY... Freshman forward Erica Meyer has recorded a team-best 33 blocked shots this season through 20 games. Her 33 blocks are the third-highest total in program history for a freshman. Andrea Mangum `90 holds the program's record for blocks by a freshman with 41. Britt King `86 sits in second place with 36.
BLOCK PARTY... Erica Meyer leads the Friars in blocked shots this season (33) and has swatted at least one shot in 15 games. Meyer currently ranks third in the BIG EAST Conference (all games) in blocks per game (1.7 bpg). Meyer recorded a season-best four blocked shots vs. Richmond (Dec. 5) and Marquette (Jan. 22), and has recorded multiple blocks in a game 10 times, including five of the last six games.
FRIARS NEED A TEAM EFFORT ON OFFENSE... The Friars are 4-2 this season when three-or-more players reach double figures in the scoring column during a game. Conversely, Providence is 0-14 on the year when two-or-fewer players reach double figures.
FRIARS' 75 POINTS VS. MARQUETTE MARK SECOND-HIGHEST SCORING OUTPUT OF THE SEASON... On Jan. 22, Providence fell to Marquette, 105-75. The Friars' 75 points marked the second-highest scoring out-put of the season, and just the third time that the Friars have tallied 70+ points. Providence tallied a season-high 88 points vs. Bryant on Dec. 9. The Friars are 2-1 this year when scoring 70+ points.
FRIARS DISH SEASON-HIGH 18 ASSISTS AGAINST MARQUETTE... Providence dished a season-best 16 assists vs. Marquette on Jan. 22 in Milwaukee, Wis. Sarah Beal led the Friars with six hand-outs in the game, while nine of the 11 players who saw action in the contest recorded at least one assist. Aside from Beal's six dimes, four other players recorded two assists (Maddie Jolin, Clara Che, Erica Meyer and Evi Iiskola).
ALIYAH MILLER RECORDS SECOND CAREER DOUBLE-DOUBLE IN LOSS AT MARQUETTE... Junior forward Aliyah Miller recorded the second double-double of her career with the Friars on Jan. 22 vs. Marquette with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Miller shot 8-12 from the field vs. the Golden Eagles. Her eight made field goals and five offensive rebounds also matched her previous career-highs.
MADDIE JOLIN NETS CAREER-HIGH 20 POINTS IN LOSS TO MARQUETTE... Freshman Maddie Jolin netted a career-best 20 points in the Friars' loss to Marquette on Jan. 22. Jolin hit 6-14 field-goal attempts, including a 6-11 showing from beyond the three-point arc.
LONG DISTANCE... Jovana `Yoyo' Nogic's six three-pointers vs. Hartford (Nov. 25) and Maddie Jolin's six threes vs. Marquette (Jan. 22) are the second-most three-point makes in a single game by a BIG EAST player this season. Blaire Langlois (Butler), Sydney Buck (Butler) and Caroline Coyer (Villanova) have each hit seven three-point buckets in a game this season.
BEAL AND JOLIN NET 20+ POINTS VS. MARQUETTE... Sarah Beal and Maddie Jolin each eclipsed the 20-point plateau vs. Marquette on Jan. 22. It marks the second time this season that multiple players have scored 20+ points in the same game. Beal (23), Jovana `Yoyo' Nogic (23) and Aliyah Miller (20) each tallied 20+ points vs. Bryant on Dec. 9.
MADDIE JOLIN COLLECTS CAREER-BEST SIX STEALS IN BACK-TO-BACK GAMES... On Jan. 8 vs. Butler, freshman guard Maddie Jolin recorded a career-high six steals. Each of her six steals came during the final 1:59 of regulation, which fueled a furious come-back effort by the Friars. Providence trailed by 27 points in the fourth quarter, but eventually fell to the Bulldogs by a 10-point margin (77-67). On Jan. 10, Jolin recorded six steals for the second-consecutive games vs. Xavier. Her six steals vs. Butler and Xavier are tied for the most thefts in a single-game during BIG EAST Conference play. St. John's Aliyyah Handford also has collected six steals this season (vs. Providence, 12/31). Jolin is the only player to record six steals in multiple league games this year.
FRIARS SHOOT 48-PERCENT FROM THE FLOOR IN LOSS TO XAVIER... On Jan. 10, the Friars shot 47.9 percent from the floor vs. Xavier (23-48). It marked the Friars' highest shooting percentage in a BIG EAST regular-season game since March 1, 2015 vs. Georgetown (.491, 28-57). Additionally, Providence knocked down an impressive 63.6-percent of its attempts from the floor vs. Xavier in the second half (14-22).
FRIARS COLLECT 11 OF THEIR 15 SECOND-HALF STEALS IN THE FOURTH QUARTER VS. BUTLER... Providence collected a season-high 16 steals in its 77-67 loss to Butler (Jan. 8). The squad recorded 11 of their 15 second-half steals in the fourth quarter. Providence's 16 thefts are the most in a single-game since Feb. 26, 2013 vs. Marquette (18).
ROOKIE IMPACT... A freshman has led the Friars in scoring nine times through 20 games. Of those nine games, Jovana `Yoyo' Nogic has led the team in scoring six times, while Clara Che has led the squad twice. Maddie Jolin led the team in scoring once. SARAH BEAL NAMED TO BIG EAST WEEKLY HONOR ROLL... Sarah Beal was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Dec. 21. It marked Beal's third appearance of the season on the honor roll and fourth of her career. The previous week, Beal notched 15 second-half points, including eight of the Friars' 11 points in OT to defeat URI, 64-55. Beal shot 4-9 from the field, hit 7-9 free-throws and added four assists and three boards.
FRIARS GRAB 48 BOARDS VS. URI... In the Friars' overtime victory against Rhode Island (12/20), the team hauled in a season-high 48 rebounds. It marks the most rebounds in a single game since the 2013-14 season opener vs. UMass Lowell (Nov. 9, 2013). On that day, the Friars tied the program's single-game rebounding record, with 65 boards.
FRIARS EARN FIRST ROAD VICTORY SINCE JAN. 23, 2015... Providence earned its first road victory of the season on Dec. 20 at Rhode Island (64-55, OT). It also marked the first road win for the program since Jan. 23, 2015, when it defeated Marquette, 66-58, in Milwaukee, Wis. Prior to the victory vs. URI on Dec. 20, the Friars had lost eight-consecutive road games.
ROAD WOES... The Friars are 1-8 this season in road games. Prior to the Friars' 64-55 overtime victory against Rhode Island on Dec. 20 of this season, Providence had not won a game on the road since Jan. 23, 2015. On that day, the Friars clipped Marquette, 66-58, in Milwaukee, Wis.
SARAH BEAL SETS PROGRAM'S SINGLE-GAME STEALS RECORD... On Dec. 9 vs. Bryant, junior guard Sarah Beal collected 10 steals to set the Friars' single-game steals record, previously held by Helen Jessie-Mency `91. Mency collected nine steals vs. Pitt on Feb. 5, 1991. For some perspective - Mency set the previous mark for steals in a game four years before Beal was born (1995).
MOST STEALS BY A BIG EAST PLAYER SINCE 2012... Sarah Beal's 10 steals on Dec. 9 vs. Bryant are the most by a BIG EAST Conference player since Andrell Smith (USF) recorded 12 on Dec. 22, 2012 vs. Creighton.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE... In addition to setting the single game steals record at Providence, with 10 thefts, Beal also recorded 23 points vs. Bryant on Dec. 9 for her first double-double of the season. It marks the first points/steals double-double by a BIG EAST player since Dec. 22, 2012 when Andrell Smith (USF) recorded 27 points and 12 steals vs. Creighton. Beal notched her first double-double on Jan. 28, 2014 vs. Butler with 13 points and 13 assists.
DOUBLE-TROUBLE... Sarah Beal notched her second double-double of the season in the Friars' game vs. Florida Gulf Coast on Dec. 12. Beal posted 12 points and a career-best 12 rebounds. Beal owns three double-doubles in her career and they all have come in different ways. On Jan. 28, 2014, she recorded 13 points and 13 assists vs. Butler. On Dec. 9, 2015, Beal posted 23 points and 10 steals vs. Bryant, followed by her 12 point/12 rebound performance vs. FGCU (Dec. 12).
THREE FRIARS NOTCH 20-POINT GAMES VS. BRYANT... Sarah Beal (23pts), Jovana `Yoyo' Nogic (23pts) and Aliyah Miller (20pts) all reached the 20-point plateau vs. Bryant on Dec. 9. It marked the first time that the Friars have three 20+ point scorers in the same game since Nov. 9, 2013 in a 109-74 victory at UMass Lowell. In that game, former Friars Alexis Harris (31pts) and Tori Rule (23pts) joined current junior guard Sarah Beal (20pts) to achieve the feat.
FRIARS POST HIGHEST SHOOTING PERCENTAGE FROM THE FIELD SINCE 2006... On Nov. 25, the Friars shot 57.5-percent from the field vs. Hartford (23-40). It marked the highest field-goal percentage in a single game since Nov. 28, 2006 vs. New Hampshire (59.6-percent, 31-52).
EIGHT OF 11 PLAYERS ON THE ROSTER ARE UNDERCLASSMEN... Providence has a youthful look in 2015-16, as eight of its 11 players are freshmen or sophomores. The freshmen are the largest class, which is comprised of five players and there are three members in the sophomore class. The Friars have just one senior (Evi Iiskola) and two juniors (Sarah Beal and Aliyah Miller).
INTERNATIONAL FLAIR... The Friars have four international players on their roster this season, including senior Evi Iiskola (Espoo, Finland), sophomore Allegra Botteghi (Bologna, Italy), freshman Clara Che (Barcelona, Spain) and freshman Jovana "Yoyo" Nogic (Lisbon, Portugal). Each of the four players have competed in FIBA-sponsored events during their international careers, including three of the four players this past summer. Nogic played for Serbia [was born in Belgrade] in the FIBA U19 World Championships and FIBA U18 European Championships. Che represented Spain, who won the gold medal at the U18 European Championships. Botteghi competed for Italy at the FIBA U20 European Championships.
BEAL NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-BIG EAST TEAM... Despite limited action in 2014-15, junior Sarah Beal was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team for the second-straight season. Prior to her sophomore campaign, Beal was an honorable mention pick. Beal concluded her rookie season [2013-14] with the Friars as a BIG EAST All-Freshman Team selection. Beal is the only current member of the team to have earned preseason or post-season honors from the BIG EAST.
WHO'S UP NEXT... The Friars hit the road for a pair of games against Xavier on Friday, Feb. 5 and Butler on Sunday, Feb. 7. PC's match-up against Xavier is set to tip-off at 8:00 p.m. and will be nationally-televised on FS1. The game vs. Butler will tip at 2:00 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN).
