Providence College point guard Sarah Beal was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for women's basketball, while junior forward Alexis Harris (Detroit, Mich.) was selected to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the fifth time this season. Beal becomes the first Friar since Chelsea Marandola `10 to earn Freshman of the Week accolades, dating back to December 26, 2005.
Beal averaged 18.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.0 steal over two games last week for the Friars. She opened the week with a career-high 27 points against Marquette (Jan. 21), making 8-of-15 attempts from the field and sinking 10-of-12 free throws. She also added four assists, three rebounds and two steals. Beal closed the week with 10 points, five assists and four rebounds against Seton Hall (Jan. 25). It marked the ninth game this season she has recorded five or more assists, and the third game during BIG EAST regular-season action.
Harris became the first player in the BIG EAST to record multiple 30-point games this season. She averaged 22.5 points, 11.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists in two games last week, shooting 60.7-percent from the field and 73.3-percent from the free-throw line. She started the week with 15 points and nine rebounds against Marquette (Jan. 21). Harris followed with 30 points against Seton Hall on Jan. 25. She hit 11-of-14 attempts from the field and 8-of-11 free throws Harris added 13 rebounds to record her seventh double-double of the season, in addition to matching her career high in assists (four).
