"RESILIENCE" - January 15, 2014
“Resilience – The ability to become strong, healthy, or successful again after something bad happens"
Our team has displayed this trait in the last several games. We have fallen behind and have battled back to either tie the game or take a lead. As a coach, I am constantly telling our players that we need to be resilient. This is an important quality to have in all of life. We all face setbacks and challenges every day. I tell them [the team] that they never know when adversity will come. They need to be prepared to face things head on, get through it and be successful again when things don’t go the way they want the first time. It has been very nice to watch them continue to be resilient and battle for that first BIG EAST win.
We now need to learn how to FINISH STRONG. I believe this is also a quality that is critical for our team to develop and consistently grasp. It is a mentality and one that we can learn through experience. We have been creating those game-like situations in practices so our team learns to finish when they get a lead late in a game. With the majority of our BIG EAST schedule still ahead of us, we have a great opportunity to FINISH STRONG.
Speaking of the BIG EAST… the opening two weeks of league play have been quite exciting! Most of the final scores of all the BIG EAST games have been decided under 10 points. It is a tough league and one that is very competitive top to bottom. I love being in the BIG EAST because of this. We are challenged every night but we also know that we have a legitimate shot to get a win in every contest. I think this is a common belief shared by all the BIG EAST coaches. It’s going to be an interesting February and March in the conference. I hope you will be watching!!
We have two home games left on the schedule this month; today [Jan. 15] vs. Georgetown at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, January 25 vs. Seton Hall at 2:30 p.m. We are set to retire Tracy Lis’ jersey at halftime of our game against Seton Hall, and we look forward to having her on campus for this event. Tracy is arguably one of the greatest players of all-time, and this honor is well deserved! I hope that you’ll come out to Alumni Hall and join us in recognizing Tracy and her accomplishments as a Friar. During her days at Providence, she played a significant role in the history of our program and we really want to make this a special event for her.
As always – we appreciate your support! Go Friars!
