Providence, R.I. -

The Providence College Athletic Department and the Friar Women’s Basketball Team are proud to present the second year of an event aimed at elementary school students in the Rhode Island area. “Project Providence: Forming the Future with the Friars” will take place on Monday, January 12 on the campus of Providence College in Alumni Hall. “Project Providence” will consist of activities to inform the students about good sportsmanship, exercise programs, appropriate behavior in athletic and non-athletic events, proper nutrition, how to be a better athlete and the importance of education. Each activity will be administered by a member of the PC athletic department.

Emceed by NBC-10’s Frank Carpano, the educational content of “Project Providence” will begin at 10:00 a.m. Monday. PC Head Women’s Basketball Coach Phil Seymore will introduce his team to begin the program. Coach Seymore will then speak with the students about some of his experiences as well as show them a few basketball drills. The PC Athletic Department also will have some of its athletic trainers and coaches speak with the children about how to stay healthy and in shape. Other special appearances by local mascots and the Friar will occur during the event as well.

The students have received pre-event guides which include educational activities, games, basketball related history and the PC women’s basketball team roster and schedule. The educational activities will be followed by a women’s basketball matchup featuring the Providence College Friars and the University of Rhode Island Rams. Tip-off is set for 12:00 p.m.

For more information on the event contact Matt Silberman at (401) 865-1733 or msilberm@providence.edu.
