Monika Roberts Named BIG EAST Co-Player Of The Week
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College junior center Monika Roberts of Pittsburg, Calif. was named BIG EAST Co-Player of the Week on Monday, January 3. Roberts received the Player of the Week honor after averaging 20.3 points and 9.8 rebounds while leading the Friars to a 3-1 mark last week. The 6-2 center was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Tulane/Doubletree Classic as she scored 47 points (23.5), pulled down 18 rebounds (9.0 rpg) and had eight blocks (4.0 bpg) as PC posted a 1-1 record at the Classic on December 27-28. On December 27, she recorded 26 points and seven rebounds in a 81-57 loss to Tulane. The following night, Roberts scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a 82-62 win against Lehigh University. On December 31, Roberts continued her strong play by registering a double-double (21 points, 15 rebounds) in a 76-69 win at Fairfield University. She closed out the week by leading the Friars to their third consecutive win with a team high 13 points and six rebounds in a 74-59 victory against Princeton on January 2 at PC's Alumni Hall. After 10 games this season, Roberts is leading the team in scoring with an average of 16.3 points per game. She also is leading the squad in rebounding (10.1 rebounds per game). Roberts, a 1997 graduate of Antioch High School, is the daughter of Janice and Vernice Roberts. The Friars (6-4, 1-0) return to action on Tuesday, January 4 against BIG EAST foe Syracuse at Syracuse, N.Y. at 7:00 p.m.
