    Providence Advances in San Juan Shootout

    Women's basketball Easily Wins First Game, 88-45

    SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - The Providence women's basketball team easily advanced to the second round of the San Juan Shootout in San Juan Puerto Rico after beating Upr-Mayaquez 88-45 Friday night.

    The Friars were led to the impressive win by the scoring of sophomore guard Meghan Hinds who led Providence in 17 points and rebounds (7) in the game. Also making her mark was senior guard Julie Wheeler who collected 13 points, dropped in a trio of three-pointers and added four assists to her impressive stats list for the night. Freshman center Monika Roberts also scored in the double-digits, posting a ten point, four rebound performance.

    Depth and balance was the key for the Friars. The scoring was well spread out with senior forward Kerri Chatten, freshman forward Jen Gombotz and junior center Dana Simonelli each collecting nine points in the game. The defense was also well covered with Hinds, Roberts, Dani Trippany and Zhara Williams each pulling down four rebounds of their own. Providence also held the entire Upr-Mayaguez roster to single-digit scoring.

    Providence outscored Upr-Mayaguez 46-24 in the first and 42-21 in the second half. The Friars shot a steady 56 (18-32) and 50 (14-28) percent respectively for a 53 (32-60) percent finish for the game.
