    Friars Defeat URI Rams in Season Opener

    PROVIDENCE, RI -- The Providence College women's basketball team defeated the University of Rhode Island, 97-73 in the Providence Civic Center this evening.

    Sophomore forward Meghan Hinds (Perrysburg, OH) led th Friars with 24 points in 29 minutes of action. Tonight was Hinds first game back after reconstructive knee surgery last March. Senior guard Mandy Saunders (Richmond, VA) added 19 points, five assists and four steals while freshman Jennifer Gombotz (Southington, CT) recorded 15 points with a team high of seven boards in her first collegiate game.

    The Friars shot .579 (20-34 FG) from the floor and held the Rams to only 10 field goals for the game as they shot 23% (10-46).

    Senior Kerri Chatten (Hopkinton, MA) sank a three-pointer at the 6:54 mark of the first half, gave PC a 24-23 lead which led to a 41-34 halftime score.

    The Rams were led by Ela Lapciuk who recorded a game high 26 points and 14 rebounds.

    Providence improves to 1-0 while Rhode Island falls to 0-2 on the season.
