Late Rally Falls Short As Women's Hoops Falls To No. 23 Seton Hall, 64-54

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to No. 23 Seton Hall, 64-54, on Tuesday, Dec. 29 in Providence, R.I. The game marked the BIG EAST opener for both programs. Seton Hall's Tabatha Richardson-Smith led all scorers with 16 points, while Jovana `Yoyo' Nogic (Lisbon, Portugal) netted a team-high 13 points for the Friars.

Providence trailed 10-6 in the first quarter before closing the final 2:22 of play with a 6-2 scoring advantage to tie the game, 12-12. Seton Hall opened the second quarter with a 13-0 run to take a 25-12 lead. The Friars answered with an 8-0 run to get within five (25-20) with 1:15 remaining on the clock. The Pirates closed the half with a 4-0 scoring edge to take a 29-20 lead at halftime.

The Friars hit 5-6 three-point buckets in the opening 20 minutes of play, while Seton Hall was 0-11 from beyond the arc. Nogic and Clara Che (Valencia, Spain) led the Friars with six and five points, respectively. Richardson-Smith tallied 14 points to pace the Pirates.

Junior Sarah Beal (Matthews, N.C.) started got the Friars on the board first just 33-seconds into the third quarter, but the Pirates put together a 9-2 spurt to take a 38-24 lead with 4:15 on the clock. Back-to-back buckets by the Friars' Erica Meyer (Wilton, Conn.) and Aliyah Miller (Southaven, Miss.) cut the deficit to 10 (38-28), but SHU finished the quarter with a 9-5 advantage on the scoreboard for a 47-33 lead.

The Pirates mounted a 17-point advantage (52-35) with 8:01 remaining in regulation. The Friars flipped the switch on offense and outscored the Pirates, 16-5, over the next 7:26 to get within six (57-51) with 1:25 left in the game. However, Seton Hall was able to hang on down the stretch with a 7-3 scoring advantage to close the game.

Beal finished the game with 10 points, six assists and one steal. Nogic earned her team-high 13 points on 5-11 shooting from the field, including 3-4 shooting from beyond the arc. Miller contributed nine points and six boards, while Meyer added six points, two blocked shots and a career-high eight rebounds.

Tiffany Jones notched a double-double for Seton Hall on 13 points and 10 boards. Shakena Richardson and Aleesha Powell finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively, to lead the Pirate's back-court. Luburdia Gordon joined Jones in the rebounding column with 10 boards.

The Friars return to action on Thursday, Dec. 31 against BIG EAST foe St. John's at 1:00 p.m. in Providence, R.I.
