Sophomore guard Tori Rule (Minneapolis, Minn.) scored a career-high 32 points in a 71-53 victory over Colorado State on Saturday, December 29 in the first round of the Fordham Holiday Classic. The game was played at Rose Hill Gym in Bronx, N.Y. Providence advances to the championship game on Sunday, December 30 against Layfayette at 3:00 p.m.
Rule unloaded for 19 first half points as the Friars took a 39-20 lead at halftime. Providence trailed 13-8 with 12:55 remaining on the clock and then took control with an 18-0 run to take a 26-13 lead. The Friars outscored the Rams 13-7 to finish the half, including a three-point dagger by Rule with one-second left.
Providence shot 53.3-percent (16-30) from the field in the opening 20 minutes, including 71.4-percent from beyond the three-point arc (5-7).
In the second half, the Rams outscored the Friars 33-32, as Providence cooled off a bit from the field. PC hit just 9-of-32 (28.1-percent) shot attempts from the floor in the half, while Colorado State hit 9-of-24 (37.5-percent).
Joining Rule in double figures was senior guard Symone Roberts (New Britain, Conn.). Roberts finished with 15 points and added nine assists, five rebounds and five steals. Senior Brianna Edwards (Minneapolis, Minn.) added eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Sophomore Alexis Harris (Detroit, Mich.) enjoyed another solid game off the bench with nine points and eight rebounds.
The Friars held a 38-34 advantage in rebounding over Colorado State. Providence also forced 19 turnovers and outscored the Rams, 30-7, in points off of turnovers. The Friars turned the ball over just 10 times in the contest. Providence also netted a season-high seven three pointers (7-18) in the game.
Rule is just the third player in the last decade to score 30+ points in a game. Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) is the last Friar to achieve the feat, having scored 31 points against Buffalo on December 2, 2009. Catherine Bove (Cincinnati, Ohio) also netted 31 points for Providence against Louisville on January 3, 2007.
