Women's Basketball Drops BIG EAST Opener To Georgetown, 75-43

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Georgetown, 75-43, in its BIG EAST Conference opener on Thursday, Dec. 28 in Providence, R.I. Junior guard Maddie Jolin (Rehoboth, Mass.) led the Friar effort with 14 points.

Georgetown started the game on a 19-0 run, as the Friars committed 11 turnovers and were 0-5 from the field through the first eight minutes of action. Providence got its first bucket of the game with 1:58 left on the clock as Ny'Dajah Jackson (Oakland, Calif.) drove hard to the hoop for a lay-in. Jackson's hoop sparked a 7-0 run and the Friars cut the deficit to 12 at the break (19-7).

Providence found its rhythm on offense in the second quarter as it shot 45.5-percent from the floor (5-11), but the Friars still couldn't trim the deficit. The teams played to a 17-17 tie in the second quarter and Georgetown went to the locker room at halftime with a 36-24 advantage. Clara Che (Valencia, Spain) tallied eight points in the second quarter on 3-4 shooting from the field.

The Hoyas started the third quarter on a 12-0 run to take a 48-24 lead with 3:28 on the clock. Jolin halted the run with the Friars' first bucket of the quarter -- a three pointer -- with 2:23 remaining. Georgetown out-scored Providence 19-12 in the stanza. Jolin was responsible for nine of the Friars' 12 points.

Jolin opened the fourth quarter with a foul-line jumper, cutting the deficit to 17 (55-38), but the Hoyas responded with another scoring run (10-0) to go ahead 65-38. Georgetown led by as many as 33 before taking the win, 75-43.

Turnovers were the story of the game, as Providence committed a season-high 30 miscues. The Hoyas out-scored Providence 35-0 in points off of turnovers. Georgetown also held a 22-0 edge in fast-break points and a 42-8 scoring advantage in the paint.

Dionna White led Georgetown with 25 points, while Mikayla Venson added 19. Cynthia Petke narrowly missed a double-double with eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Friars return to action on Saturday, Dec. 30 against 18th-ranked Villanova. The game will be played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. and will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) via FOX Sports Go. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
