The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Clemson, 73-63, on December 22 in Providence, R.I. Senior Rachel Barnes (Windsor, Conn.) led three Friars in double figures with 17 points. Senior Teya Wright (Paterson, N.J.) posted her ninth double-double of the season on 16 points and 10 rebounds. Lauren Okafor (New Haven, Conn.) chipped in seven points, 11 rebounds and a career-high five blocked shots.
The Friars took a 41-34 lead into the locker room at halftime on the strength of Barnes' 12 first-half points. She also hauled in six rebounds in the opening 20 minutes, five of which came off the offensive glass. Shaniqua Pauldo led Clemson in the first half with 10 points.
The Friars' lead swelled to 14 (48-43) as the team started the second half on a 7-0 run in the first 1:28 of play. Clemson fought back to get within four (54-50) with 8:38 remaining in the game, but senior Lola Wells (Fontana, Calif.) knocked down a three-pointer to push the Friars' lead to seven (57-50) with 8:10 on the clock. It proved to be the closest Clemson would get the rest of the way.
Sophomore guard Danielle Pearson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) contributed a team-high four assists in 10 minutes of action for Providence. Junior Symone Roberts (New Britain, Conn.) added six points, four rebounds, three assists and a game-high three steals.
Wright jumped into the top-10 on the Friars' all-time career rebounding list with her 10 boards. She heads into the holiday break with 737 career rebounds, which is good for 9th place. She passed Stefanie Goettsche '94 and Lucie Fontanella '94, who registered 733 and 735 rebounds, respectively, during their careers.
Pauldo finished with a game-high 20 points for Clemson and added six rebounds. Nikki Dixon led the offensive effort with 13 points, while Quinyotta Pettaway added 10 points and a team-best seven rebounds. Five of Pettaway's rebounds came off the offensive glass.
Providence returns to action on Wednesday, December 28 against Akron. The game will be played at 7:00 p.m. in Akron, Ohio. The Friars return home on Saturday, December 31 to face Hartford at 1:00 p.m. The game will be televised live in Connecticut by CPTV. Please check your local listings.
